Today, I’d like to share some of the more unusual requests I’ve received in my career.
If you already know me, you may picture traditional hypnotherapy or coaching sessions. But in fact, I’ve been involved in a wide range of projects beyond that framework.
🧪 Collaboration with a French Perfume Brand: Scent × Subconscious Experiment
One day, I was contacted by a fragrance development team in, France. They were looking for a “hypnotherapist in New York” to assist with an experimental project exploring the connection between scent and human response at the subconscious level.
The experiment involved observing how people responded under hypnosis to naturally derived scents. The keywords “hypnotherapist” and “New York–based” matched my profile perfectly, and I was chosen to join the project amongst other hypnotherapists in NYC with honor.
The study involved an equal number of male and female participants, and it turned out to be a truly fascinating experience. Many participants were curious about hypnotherapy and eager to try it for the first time. As a gift, I offered them a forest-inspired relaxation session, which was very well received.
Interestingly, someone I know very well — my ex-husband — also participated.Though he doesn’t believe in hypnosis or the subconscious at all, even he ended up feeling deeply relaxed during the forest visualization session! (Yes, I smiled.)
🧠 Creating a Full Psychiatric Evaluation Reports
This is another project that drew upon my background in psychology and Master degree of social work. Thanks to my MSW (Master of Social Work) degree from the University of Michigan (Go Blue!) and clinical experience, I was approached through a law firm to create a formal Psychiatric evaluation for submission to a state law enforcement agency.
The report included a psychological profile, an assessment of the individual’s state at the time of the incident, and professional recommendations for handling the case in the legal system.Because of the linguistic and cultural nuances involved, my bilingual ability played a key role too.
Writing legal documents requires extremely careful wording and multiple rounds of editing.Even so, I’ve received thank-you letters from my client — messages like “I’m so glad I met you.” Those moments make the effort worthwhile.
Thanks to everyone's support, I didn’t receive any questions or objections regarding the evaluation report — in fact, I even received a thank-you letter, which made it a truly rewarding experience.
Of course, as a relatively new immigrant, playing a role within the American legal system was both new and challenging for me.However, it was also filled with valuable lessons and turned out to be an incredibly educational experience.
👩👧 Court-Ordered Supervision for Parent-Child Visitation
I’ve also been asked to conduct legally supervised visitations between a parent and children following divorce or separation in the U.S.
The clients were caseworkers and attorneys, often requesting support from someone with both clinical experience and cultural sensitivity to supervise the visitations of certain parents who is required to be supervised.
Sometimes I worked in teams with child psychiatrists, and in other cases, I submitted official reports directly to the Family Court or Court assigned attorney.
Those are extremely sensitive cases that I have to be careful and cautious to watch the parent and also the child in the visitations.
The nature of my role in this setting is completely different from therapy or coaching that they were not willing participants at the first place and I have co-workers and others in legal systems to support me to do the job.
💡 What These Projects Had in Common: “Expertise + Bilingualism”
Each of these roles shared three key elements:
Deep knowledge of therapy and psychology
Professional credentials as an MSW(Master of Social Work)
Bilingual communication and cultural understanding in Japanese and English
This combination allowed me to contribute to projects that go beyond the typical scope of therapy and coaching.
Originally, I began this therapist work with the simple hope of helping others through what I do best. It’s always fulfilling to be of service — in whatever form that takes.
