âď¸Â How You Spend Your Morning Is the Ticket to Success
Letâs talk about Howard Schultz, the founder of Starbucks. Youâve probably heard the phrase: âMillionaires start their mornings differently.â
Most people reach for their phone the moment they wake up âscrolling through social media, checking the news â a habit for many. But this is a reactive start, one that lowers productivity.
When you absorb othersâ emotions and information first thing in the morning, your energy drops â and your focus for the day follows.
In fact, right after waking up, our brain waves are still calm âtransitioning from the deep sleep delta waves into the theta waves, the very frequency where the subconscious mind operates.
Itâs known that children up to age seven function mainly in theta waves âthatâs why they learn languages, habits, and behaviors so quickly. What we internalize at that age stays with us, shaping our adult lives.
So this early-morning state is powerful â itâs the best time to influence your mind and your life. And because mornings set the tone for the entire day, starting in chaos can unconsciously set chaos into motion.
Thatâs why successful people â especially self-made millionaires â tend to wake up early and follow their own mindful routines. They donât drift into the day â they design it.They begin the day by choice, not by habit.
This one decision â how you start your morning â is truly the key to success.
âď¸Â Howard Schultzâs Morning Routine
1ď¸âŁÂ Morning walk and exerciseMoving your body awakens both the brain and the heart.Better blood flow leads to clearer thinking and higher focus for the day.
2ď¸âŁÂ The coffee ritual (with his wife)For Schultz, coffee is a sacred morning ritual. He grinds the beans himself and brews the coffee mindfully âa time to quiet the mind, feel gratitude, and center himself.
3ď¸âŁÂ Productive inputInstead of scrolling the phone, he reads trusted sources âlike The Wall Street Journal or The New York Times âto understand the world from a calm, informed perspective.
𧠠The Mechanism of HabitThe brain builds habits through a simple cycle:
Cue â Routine â Reward.
Repeating this loop creates a âpleasurable patternâ the brain memorizes.
Example (good habit):
Cue: The alarm rings
Routine: Go for a walk
Reward: Feeling refreshed and clear-headed
This ârewardâ sensation is what locks the habit in.But the same rule applies to bad habits too:
Cue: The alarm rings
Routine: Grab your phone
Reward: Short-term stimulation (adrenaline hit)
Watching videos or scrolling releases adrenaline âa short, addictive high that tricks the brain into feeling rewarded. But it drains energy and destroys morning productivity.
Breaking that loop takes awareness and a little willpower âbut itâs absolutely possible.
â¨Â Conclusion
Which habit will turn your life around? The answer is simple.
Reaching for your phone gives a quick reward but creates rushed, reactive days.
Choosing mindfulness instead âplacing your phone aside, brewing your coffee slowly, and preparing your mind and body for the day âreturns the steering wheel of life back to you.
That is the first step toward living intentionally â and successfully.
