Have you ever come across the headline “How to Erase People You Don’t Like”?Of course, this doesn’t mean anything violent—it’s about a way of living.
The More You Dislike, the Harder Life Becomes
It’s undeniable: the more people you dislike, the harder life feels. The more things you hate, the heavier daily living becomes. On the other hand, if you could like everyone and enjoy everything, your days would feel surprisingly bright and joyful.
But reality isn’t that simple. We all sometimes think: “I really don’t like that person” or “I don’t want to do this.”
Someone says something unpleasant, and it ruins your mood for the whole day.
Even after many years, there’s still someone you just cannot forgive.
I’m sure many of you have experienced this.
What Happens When Negative Emotions Linger
Negative emotions naturally arise in human beings. We cannot make them vanish completely. However, when we hold onto them for a long time, they cause serious harm to our mind and body.
From the perspective of neuroscience as well, holding strong negative feelings makes us more likely to attract similar experiences.
This can be explained not only by the so-called “law of attraction,” but also by how the brain itself works.
The Color Bath Effect and RAS
The brain has a phenomenon called the Color Bath Effect: “You notice more of the things that you focus on.”
For example, if you’re thinking about buying a particular car, you suddenly start noticing that car everywhere on the street. Or in a noisy place, you can still pick out your own name being called.
This happens because of the Reticular Activating System (RAS), a function located in the brainstem.RAS acts as a filter, bringing only what the brain deems “important” up into conscious awareness from the flood of information around us.
In other words, the stronger you think “I hate this” or “I can’t forgive that,” the more your brain selectively picks up similar events, causing you to experience even more negativity.
The Risk of Holding onto Resentment
When you continue to carry negative emotions toward someone for a long time, not only your mind but also your body accumulates stress. The stronger the feelings of “hate” or “unforgiveness,” the more of your precious energy gets drained away by that person or situation.
Looking Ahead
So how can we break free from this vicious cycle? The answer lies in shifting where we place our focus.
In the next article, I will share practical ways to release and transform this pattern.
